A Certain Scientific Railgun Volume One Review

What happens when you mix superpowers with slice of life? You get A Certain Scientific Railgun. The series is a side story or gaiden to the popular light novel series A Certain Magical Index. This series follows Misaka Mikoto, a supporting character from the Magical series, follows her daily adventures in Academy City, she happens to be one of the most powerful espers in the city with her Railgun ability, which she’s able to generate and manipulate electricity.
I haven’t read nor watched any of the anime adaptations before reading the first volume of Railgun. The series does well introducing and setting up the world to new readers unfamiliar with the Magical universe, but the overall comic is underwhelming. While the plot is intriguing, its execution falls short. The fan service really hurts this comic. There's a lot of jokes either on Mikoto's breasts(She's 14 or 15) or why she wears shorts than panties, this happens in almost every chapter and it's really annoying. Railgun is one of those comics that has an interesting premise that fails to reach its great potential. -Panagiotis Drakopoulos
