If you’ve ever read any of the Dresden Files books then you are already a fan of Harry Dresden. These mini-series adaptations of the novels are actually quite good and true to the book. Thankfully we have Jim Butcher involved so it can be assured that this is his vision and we see what he knows to be important and that it should be shown to the readers.
While there are times I think that the description of Harry differs from what we see on the page but the essence of his character is here in spades. It’s not just Harry either as we see Murphy, Carmichael and even Marcone.
Very rarely will an adaptation give you something that you got from reading the novel but that is exactly what happens here. You see on the page what you’re mind saw while reading the book and the translation from one medium to another is so smooth it’s like lying on silk. That sense of wonder, excitement and even that dread you get when you think Harry doesn’t have a clue as to what he’s doing but manages to come out on top.
For instance in this issue he’s being held captive till Marcone arrives to see him. He starts prodding an aging werewolf, goading him into beating him and you’re thinking what the hell is he thinking besides sending him back to unconsciousness? Then Marcone arrives saves Harry’s ass and the issue ends. Still he manages to get away with it and it’s almost as if you have no clue as to why he’s doing what he’s doing.
I will say that at times the art could be a tad crisper, cleaner and scarier when the story calls for it. Also what they can do with colours now means that the magic should really pop off the page. Minor annoyances considering I’m rather enjoying this book but think of these as things that could improve.
I’ve got news for you if you aren’t a fan of the books but want to know what the hype is all about then this series is suited perfectly for you too. Come see what the fuss and fun are all about!
