On the Cover: Massimo Carnevale

MassEffectEvolution3-cover-by-Massimo-Carnevale
Massimo Carnevale's sci-fi slash fantasy style art lends itself perfectly to comic covers. His paintings are so full of intricate detail, and the beautiful, soft lines he creates make each of his works a pleasure to look at. The Italian hit the mainstream comics industry in 2003 when he was discovered by DC and put to work creating covers for Brian K Vaughan's Y - The Last Man. His covers are gloriously layered and textured, as he applies a variety of artistic techniques in his work. Hit the jump for a look at his work!

Carnevale perfectly captures the tone of Brian Wood's Northlanders. Gritty, violent and super detailed.

I love the pop art style elements here, that contrast powerfully with the detailed fantasy style painted elements. The design of the next few covers make them pop.

I love the perspective of the cover. The low camera angle put's emphasis on the strength of the smithy, and the sparks flying out onto the read add extra dynamo.

I love the design of this cover - the smoke coming from the bullet hole, the embryo in the eye, the oil leaks on the side of the head - beautiful.

Carnevale's Y-The Last Man covers saw him playing with style, as is evident by the very different cover bellow.

The composition of this one is phenomenal. The way each line works on the page, and the empty space at the top make's this cover stand out.
