Review: The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #3

stls3
The Strange Talent of Luther Strode is kind of like Kick-Ass but way better. It follows a typical, teenage nerdy kid who is sick of being bullied so orders a weight gain program from the back of a comic. Luther is sceptical at first but the program has him shocked by It’s effectiveness. It’s a little too good…
We’re at the midway point in this 6 issue series and Luther is talked into putting on a costume to fight crime. Things don’t quite go according to plan (as if they ever do). I love the relationships in this book – they are honest and real, and this issue confirmed that my favourite character is Luther’s mom. She doesn’t appear much, but when she does, she is so mom-like it’s kinda scary.

What’s also scary is the kind of violence Luther now finds himself thinking about. He has developed amazing power, and quite literally doesn’t know his own strength.
Luther Strode is one of the most violent yet enjoyable comics on the market today, up there with the likes of John Layman’s Chew. Tradd Moore’s art is an absolute delight - bright, vibrant and dynamic. It’s also graphic. Very, very graphic. We’re talking heads being ripped of shoulders kinda graphic.
If you like books like Chew and Kick-Ass, that combine vibrant art, humour and over the top violence, then the Strange Talent of Luther Strode is a series you should be reading.
